In March 2020 in response to the pandemic, the United Way of Lamar County created a COVID-19 CRISIS FUND to assist those financially impacted by the COVID-19.
Over $50,000 was donated to the fund and was given out in direct assistance to those needing help paying their rent or utility bills. Over 170 families in Lamar County were assisted. In addition, Meals on Wheels was given a $5000 grant to help with influx of new client and Safe-T was given a $2000 grant for client hotel stays when shelter was closed due to positive Covid-19 cases. The United Way of Lamar County also purchased 2500 masks were purchased locally and distributed to all partner agencies for free.
The fund is now closed, but a permanent rental assistance program has been implemented to continue to keep Lamar County families in their homes. The application for rental assistance can be found on our website and is also available at the United Way office on the 20th of each month until the end of the month. Utility assistance is offered in a limited amount on a case-by-case basis.
